Brief Program Description:
There is broad understanding of the existence of placebo responses, but much less understanding of how a placebo might produce changes. Recently, functional neuro-imaging studies of the brain have demonstrated changes in brain activity in response to placebos, and the areas of placebo response overlay many areas associated with pain response. This program will briefly review the general functions of particular areas of the brain, and then apply findings from research in placebo responses to brain anatomy. Most of the discussion will focus on placebo responses to pain, but there will be briefer discussion about placebo responses and depression
Program Objectives:
- Participants will have an enhanced understanding of the function of the insula, anterior cingulate, frontal lobe, and reward areas, of the brain.
- Participants will have an understanding of the mechanism for functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI).
- Participants will be able to describe basic changes in brain function related to placebo response to pain.
- Participants will be able to describe how placebo responses resemble treatment responses in depression.
