Proposed Israeli Law for Clinical Trial Conduct in Human Subjects – balances or limitations?
On September 10th, 2008, the Israeli Chapter of ACRP hosted its 4th annual National Conference in Tel Aviv, Israel, with the support of Pharma Israel, Israel Life Science Industry (ILSI), and the Israel Medical Association (IMA). The conference was attended by close to 300 clinicians, scientists, lawyers, clinical research associates and coordinators, members and chairpersons of local IRBs, and representatives of the pharmaceutical industry. The event was chaired by the President of the ACRP Israeli Chapter, Ahuva Koren.
In addition to the two main presentations at the conference, which can be found below, there were two panel discussions on “Balances and limitations in the proposed law, the fundamental aspect” and “practical aspects of the proposed law.” Additional information on the conference and these panel discussions can be found in the Report below.
Two central messages were delivered during the conference: 1)The local clinical trials industry and medical center based research units strongly recommend that the legislation will define clear timelines for the approval process for clinical trials in Israel. 2) Industry and hospital based clinical investigators endorse the initiation of a national campaign via the media to promote volunteer participation in clinical trials.
It was concluded that clinical research is a win-win-win situation, with medical, clinical and legitimate economic benefits for participants, clinicians and the pharmaceutical industry. The 4th Conference of the Israeli Chapter of ACRP provided an essential platform for discussion concerning the promotion of the proposed Israeli law for clinical trial conduct in human subjects. Attendees had the opportunity to voice their views which were heard by the legislators and will undoubtedly impact final legislation.
